Internship@the National Congress

"I have been working in the Chilean Congress studying the Challenges of Women in Chilean Society. This opportunity has allowed me to put my studies into practice and in return give something back to Chile. Before I leave, I will hand in an informative report that will be used by the Chilean congress for future legislative decisions. My internship consist of a three-days a week practice. The first day is commited to active study. I meet with Chilean feminists, speak with women from all different social classes, and immerse myself in any subject of Chilean society that is constructive to my area of study. The second day I dedicate to understanding the congress and Chilean politics. Last week I sat in on a hearing at the house of deputees on a Bill that would allow legalized divorce. The third day of the week, I meet with Cristián Beltrán Gacitua, the head secretary PPD (Partido por la Democracia) ie. Democratic party. He reviews my progress and gives me additional advice and instruction. He often teaches me about government and Chilean politics.

My interests include International relations, Latin American Studies, and Women studies. This will be my second semester at University of Viña del Mar. Last semester I took classes in Spanish, History of Latin America and Chile, and Chilean culture. I have found that my education this past year has been well-rounded and self-constructive. By integrating my previous studies, at the University of Virginia, with my new perception of the world, from my studies in Chile, I am gaining a well-rounded education and constistenly growing a repertoire of knowledge that builds on itself. I have been working fairly independently. I am expected to keep well updated on world news and national news from Chile as well. This has been an active and interactive experience for me. It requires me to be self-motivated and interactive with Chile on a personal level."
